About Us
GAP Patient Transport provides specialist 24/7 secure Mental Health Transport for both Urgent and Non-urgent transfers across England, Wales, Scotland, and Europe.
As experts in the safe and dignified conveyance of individuals with mental health needs, we ensure that our staff training, vehicles, and equipment are all specifically designed to meet the highest standards of care, safety, and compliance.
Our Staff
At GAP Patient Transport, we take a person-centred and flexible approach to every transfer.
Our ambulances are crew-matched to patient needs—crews are skill-matched and gender-matched to promote dignity, comfort, and trust throughout the journey.
Our teams include Registered Mental Health Nurses (RMNs) and Health Care Assistants (HCAs), selected based on the assessed level of clinical and behavioural risk. Each crew composition is determined following a comprehensive risk assessment to ensure the right skill mix for every service user.
All staff receive extensive training before undertaking patient-facing duties, including:
-
BILD ACT-certified Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression (PMVA)
-
Safeguarding of Adults and Children
-
Mental Health Awareness
-
First Aid and Physical Health Monitoring
-
De-escalation and Communication Skills

This ensures that every patient is supported safely, respectfully, and compassionately, in line with CQC key lines of enquiry.

Our Ambulance Fleet
Our fleet has been specially adapted to provide safe, secure, and discreet mental health transport.
We prioritise privacy, dignity, and comfort—most of our ambulances are unmarked, ensuring discretion at every stage of conveyance.
We provide a range of vehicles to meet diverse patient needs:
-
High Secure Vehicles – Equipped with secure cells or passenger cabins with seating for service users and escort staff.
-
Low Secure Vehicles – Unmarked ambulances with conference-style seating to support communication and comfort, particularly for adults and young people who may find high-security settings intimidating.
Every vehicle is maintained to CQC, NHS, and DVSA standards, and fitted with specialist safety and monitoring equipment.

Coordination and Liaison

Our administrative and coordination teams play a vital role in ensuring safe, effective, and well-led transport services.
Each transfer begins with a detailed risk assessment and discussion of the service user’s needs, allowing us to allocate the appropriate vehicle, staff, and approach.
Our coordinators are trained to review and validate statutory documentation at the point of conveyance, ensuring full compliance with legal requirements.
We maintain close liaison with referring and receiving hospitals to provide accurate updates, including:
-
Expected time of arrival
-
Any incidents or delays en route
-
Key handover information to support continuity of care
Through clear communication, skilled staff, and purpose-built vehicles, GAP Patient Transport delivers a service that is safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led — fully aligned with CQC’s fundamental standards of quality and safety.
